Roof Area Calculator for Inspections

Estimate the true surface area of a roof from its footprint dimensions and pitch. Useful for scoping roof condition inspections, drone roof surveys, solar feasibility and maintenance planning for commercial, industrial and council buildings.

Why roof area matters for inspection scoping

Roof surface area — not just the building footprint — determines how long a roof inspection takes, how many images a drone survey captures and how maintenance quantities (coatings, sheeting, fasteners, membranes) are estimated. A 30° pitched roof has roughly 15% more surface area than its footprint; steep heritage roofs can exceed 40% more. Getting the true area right up front produces accurate inspection scopes and defensible maintenance budgets.

Drone roof inspections for commercial and council buildings

Drone roof surveys capture complete high-resolution coverage of metal, membrane and tiled roofs without anyone stepping on fragile sheeting or working at heights. Thermal imaging locates trapped moisture and insulation defects invisible to the eye. For portfolios — schools, depots, community buildings, industrial sheds — consistent drone capture across every roof produces comparable condition data for renewal planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate roof area from the building footprint?

Multiply the footprint area by the pitch factor: 1 ÷ cos(pitch angle). For example a 1,000 m² footprint at 22.5° pitch is about 1,082 m² of actual roof surface. Complex roofs with multiple planes, dormers or parapets add further area.

How often should commercial roofs be inspected?

Annually as a baseline, plus after severe weather events. Roofs older than 15 years, coastal roofs and roofs with a defect history benefit from six-monthly inspections.

Can drones inspect fragile or unsafe roofs?

Yes — that is one of their biggest advantages. Fragile roofing (asbestos cement, aged fibreglass, corroded metal) that cannot legally or safely be walked is captured completely by drone without any load on the structure.
